I Love a Sex Offender on Facebook

All families matter, even those of sex offenders

As the fiancee of a registered sex offender, the New York Times article "Public-Place Laws Tighten Rein on Sex Offenders" was difficult to read. (As an advocate, it was nothing new.) As frustrated as I am with New York's justice system, I am thankful that at least as of today, it's still legal for my loved one and I to go to the beach, hike around the lake and take our dogs to a park if we feel like it.

Still, there's something really sad about realizing that, in some parts of the country, my family, small as it may be, is legally NOT ALLOWED to go to the beach. The man I love more than anything in the world will be ARRESTED and put in JAIL for walking onto a pier. And there are people out there who truly, honestly believe that it will somehow protect children. Thinking this way is not something I do often nor is it something I recommend, but unfortunately it is an inescapable consequence of the political climate we live in today.

Today I don't have any pandering politician to shame, or a blatant myth to correct, or a county sheriff to berate. Today, I just want to acknowledge the sadness and the loss that is experienced by every last loved one of a registered sex offender in this country. There's no getting around it and there's no immediate solution. Some days are overwhelmingly more difficult than others, and some are so bad you might rather not wake up. They will pass. But lay silent and scared forever, and we risk allowing the walls to close in completely. It is for that reason that we must find the balance between being able to function on a daily basis and standing up for our family's right to exist.

Don't let the fear overcome you. OWN it!

  1. Thank you for raising my consciousness once again. I am in California where I've gotten used to ordinances that prohibit registrants from doing so many things. California RSOL is working diligently to challenge these ordinances and it's a steep uphill battle. The Mayor Pro Tem, a Hispanic woman, of Santa Ana, CA actually said in a City Council meeting that the rights of her family were more important that the rights of any registrant's family in going to a public park, theater, public library.

    1. This is true. I presented before them and was shocked by her comments. I find it interesting that such people even make it to elected office. They kissed the DA's ass so hard I was impressed that he could actually set back down on his (must have been) chapped ass.

  2. we as families will fight until we get these laws changed!!!!!!!! if parents would watch their children like they should this would not be a problem at all. blame the ones that don't. watch your children when they are on the computer no matter what their age and it can't happen!!!!!!!!!

  3. Hi my name is Deb and in three years my son will be released from prison and honestly he might be better off staying where he is. I live in Illinois and our legislation has past law where they can't go into parks and if a park is located between point A to point B they can't be within 500 yards of that park especially if kids are present (and tell me when are kids not there except after dark). I have written to our legislators how are they going to tell the "offenders" apart from so called normal people when such groups of people as teachers, ministers, physicians, politicians, lawyers and yes even cops are found on the registry list. As we going to require all people to wear cattle tags such we do no to enter our place of employment thanks to 911 because that is what is going to be needed because the registry list in just about every state is growing every day. Yes I can understand the Hispanic woman stating what she did but she should not fear the guys caught in the Romeo/Juliet law or like my son who was placed in prison for child pornography, both are non-violent offences. Putting someone on the registry will not keep the violent offender at bay, he cares less about the law and will attach just because he wants to. In fact having this list makes it easier for them because they know they can hide behind all the others. If all the non-violent offenders were taken off the list the violent ones would stand out so much more making it easier for the authorites to locate them. They also know that the "pin map" also makes it easier for them to hide because all of them are grouped together - if each pin were assigned a color people lookikng at the "map" would see that maybe they don't have much to fear but the government has placed fear into the minds of people and that's where they want to keep it and they have no intention of removing that fear. Somehow, all of us who are effected by these witch hunting laws need to stand up as a whole to let the public know they need not fear our husbands, sons, or brothers especially if they committed a non violent offence.

    2. Anon your kid is why the list exists. Downloading child porn makes your son a pedo. You know what he is, nothing will fix him and he will give in eventually. Him being on the list is the least of your worries.

    3. Honestly, where in God's name do you people come up with this stuff? Clearly, you do not even know what a pedophile is.

  4. I don't know why people are so scared of People of such Sex Crimes that took place. I believe that the only thing that would make children safe is to be an alert parent. Watch your Kids lady. Because I see many parents not paying any attention to there children and the child get further away from the parent then there's trouble. I can't understand why these "SHEEPLE" (people) get it, this is a very emotional stance that cost 100's of millions of California tax payers and many still buy into it, why? I can say this because it makes people feel safe for there children and that's that. I also see that many of the masses look to the media and "want to hear, see and talk about Sex offenders. I think they love this bad stuff I really do. I makes me Sick to my stomach to see people like this. But there is a final part of this reality, "The Sheltered Ones" in society believe their safe and that the Law with shield them from such reality. Well I'm sorry to bring it to you this way the "Sheltered One" in your gated communities, you are the one that is the problem you are the one that is spending our tax dollars preaching this silly Jessica's law to people to keep you and your Bureaucratic partners in business. Just fallow the money, you all get money from the Federal folks to keep people scared and their children so-called safe from mean bad people that are Sex Offenders. Yeah, well what about the Gang Members that shoot other children and beat up other youth and even kill other young people. Huh who's talking about that. That is so tragic, when a young Gang member attack another boy of girl. Sell drugs and more violence in our Schools and Parks. I think and really believe this is a Money Making Machine that takes place in the back rooms No one knows about, just like that movie Jodi Foster made when she was to explore that Universe in this time capsule, and when the President of the United States had been told about this development and was told and shown this thing, The President said where do the money come from for this project. The President didn't know nothing about "BLACK OP'S, the black hole that suck's up so much money that even light can't even escape it. So people your children are as safe as you want them to be by paying attention to them and teach them to not allow strangers to get close in to them, when they see a stranger getting to close you must teach your child to pick up and leave immediately toward his or her parent or trusted one. Well that's all for today, because this law to protect children cost so much in 100's of millions and no child is safe. It makes me laugh and feel sorry for those people that really think that their communities are safe. Even the trusted one like Police, School teachers, Fire Men, Church's, YMCA teachers, Coaches, Trainers for children, and other people like some woman molest children too. Not just Man, women have been caught too, But get a lesser punishment than men do. That's crazy, why is that??? I really want to know that question.

    1. There's lots of reasons for how out of control sex offender laws have become, but here's a few: greed, fear, ignorance.

  6. i wrote my governor of tenn about these laws that wont let families be families . it hurts me that im the only one whom can go to school with him , pool , play at park . and because of my husband past he cant be part of any of our son life . going to store , eat , and stay home is not a life for a family .just to take a walk around a park together as a family . go swimming , and just be a family , we caNT DO . we are christains love the LORD , and yes we are living not being able to even enjoy nature walks. even . i go to pool with my son and i wana cry , part me wants to not even go cause my husband cant do any these family things , and i dont feel right going , but i have to let my son enjoy some life , once in awhile.. he is young and dont understand all this , but im worried when hes older he will be mad at his father for his not beign able to be part his life more.. our son is not the victim , it happened way before me and my hub gotten together , anyways ,i hate these laws and thefees are crazy . i am stricken with arthritis , still working and paying almost 600 mth in court . pro gps and annual registration on top polygraph test fees . , i pray registries will end one day so families can be families again .i hope we all will write the governors and let them know , . i think long as as ex offender is in treatment they should be allowed to go places long as they are with someone who is accountable for them .the way the world is going .one day everyone will be in a police state .
